My name is Matthew Keenan and I am a second year Sport Industry major with a business minor. I am from Fairfax, Virginia just outside Washington D.C. and have been wanting to go to Ohio State for as long as i can remember. My first and most valuable experience in a leadership position that really shaped me was when i was named captain of my lacrosse team my sophomore year of high school. This was the first time i had really been named the leader of a large group of people. I was always a very shy reserved person so being a vocal leader was not something i was really comfortable with. I felt very uncomfortable and honestly didn't do a great job for the first few weeks. I was so focused on pleasing everyone and forgot to worry about what was important which is keep the team goals first in mind. After i realized that i started to feel more comfortable and started doing a much better job. This impacted the way i acted on and off the field as i just felt a lot more comfortable around people as a whole. I started to be more of a leader in every day life instead of just being a follower for everything. I honestly believe had i not had this opportunity i would be like a turtle in his shell today but thanks to this opportunity i am able to be a much better improvement to society and the world around me.

  2. What's up Matt! You're actually not to far from my hometown in Germantown, Maryland. Like yourself, I'm also a Sports Industry major and from what I hear, the key to success in our field is to be able to lead in all areas and groups. I was the same way in high school as far being very shy and reserved, and it also wasn't until I was named captain of my Football team that I began to step up in the leadership role as well.I feel like that's the great aspect of sports that people who aren't involved in it wouldn't understand, but for me sports has given me that confidence to be able to lead not only on the field but in other areas too.

  3. It is amazing when put into the role of leadership by others, people learn how to guide with leadership. Perhaps leadership is not necessary just a title, but a mindset to support, lead and encourage more than one other.
Also, it is remarkable how situations and events shape us to the person we are today, when in the midst of it all, it is frustrating and challenging. Perseverance and struggle can build courage and character.
